Invisible but Indispensable Raw Material in Ceramic Products—Silica Sand
In the production of ceramics, silica sand plays a very fundamental and crucial role, whether in body, glaze, or the frit system.
Its main component is high-purity silica. This has a very direct impact on molding stability, firing performance, and the final appearance.

If choose proper silica sand, the production will run smoothly. If not, problems tend to show up all at once.


Typical Applications:

Ceramic body: Floor tiles, Wall tiles, Sanitary ware industry, Daily ceramics;
Ceramic glaze: Transparent glaze, White glaze, Colored glaze;
Ceramic Frit;

In the ceramic body, the sand works like a skeleton.
Silica sand doesn’t have plasticity, but it can provide strength and stability.

During drying and firing, it helps the ceramic body hold its shape, reduces the risk of warping, and keeps overall shrinkage under control.

That is especially important for large-sized tiles and sanitary ware. The stable particle size and reasonable gradation can often significantly increase the yield of finished products.


In glazes and frits, silica sand becomes the core material.
In glaze and frit systems, silica sand forms the main glass network.

Transparency, gloss, and chemical resistance of the glaze are largely determined by the purity and consistency of SiO₂.


Iron content is especially critical here.
Even small variations can cause yellowing or greying of the glaze surface, which is why low-iron, high-whiteness silica sand is preferred for these applications.


Main Characteristics:

SiO₂: ≥ 98.5% (≥ 99.0% for glaze / frit grade)
Fe₂O₃: ≤ 0.05% (≤ 0.03% for glaze grade)
Al₂O₃: ≤ 0.6%
TiO₂: ≤ 0.05%
LOI: ≤ 0.3%
Whiteness (for glaze): ≥ 90 (80%~98% are available)

Specifications can be adjusted according to specific ceramic processes.
