How To Select The Appropriate Thickness of Alumina Liner Bricks for Ball Mills with Different Diameters

The selection of the thickness of alumina liner bricks for a ball mill is not only related to the diameter of the ball mill, but also closely linked to the mill’s operating conditions (such as load, speed, etc.), the type of grinding media, and the hardness of the material being processed.

For example:

A ball mill with a diameter of 176cm (1.76m) is considered a medium-small size mill. When selecting the thickness of alumina liner bricks, the following factors need to be considered:

1. Common Thickness of Alumina Liner Bricks:

  • Small ball mills (<1m): 10mm–50mm

  • Medium ball mills (1m–2m): 40mm–80mm

  • Large ball mills (>2m): 50mm–150mm

Based on the diameter of the ball mill alone, for a 1.76m diameter mill, the typical alumina liner brick thickness would range from 50mm to 75mm.

2. Recommended Thickness Options:

  • 50mm: Suitable for fine grinding, smaller grinding media (≤30mm), and light wear resistance requirements.

  • 60mm–75mm (Recommended): Suitable for medium-hardness materials, grinding with regular ceramic balls or high-alumina balls, offering a balance between wear resistance and grinding efficiency.

  • For heavy-duty grinding, high-hardness materials, or long-running mills, thicker liners (80mm or more) can be chosen to increase durability, but this will reduce the mill’s effective volume.

3. Otner Influencing Factors:

  • Mill Speed: High-speed mills can use thinner liners (50–60mm) to minimize volume loss in the chamber. Low-speed mills are better suited to thicker liners (60–75mm) for enhanced wear resistance.

  • Grinding Media: If using alumina balls or zirconia balls, it is recommended to choose 60–75mm thickness. If using corundum or silica balls, thicker liners may be considered to extend service life.

  • Material Hardness: For harder materials (e.g., quartz, feldspar, oxides), liners thicker than 60mm are recommended. For softer materials (e.g., calcium carbonate, clay), 50–60mm liners are suitable.

Conclusion: For a ball mill with a 176cm (1.76m) diameter, it is recommended to select alumina liner bricks with a thickness of 50mm–75mm. The exact thickness should be adjusted based on the grinding media, material hardness, and operating conditions of the mill.
